"Ukrainian citizens who turn 18 years old in 2024 can receive 908 UAH from the government for books within a year from their birthday. This money can be spent on printed, electronic, or audiobooks in the Ukrainian language," the release noted.
The program is expected to encourage "reading activity" among Ukrainian teenagers and support the Ukrainian publishing industry.
To receive the payments, you need to:
- install the "Diia" app;
- select the "eBook" service;
- follow the link to open a special virtual bank card "eBook" at one of the Ukrainian banks;
- submit an application.
If the application is approved, the money will be credited to the "eBook" card, and it must be used within three months, according to the release.
"Books can only be purchased in the Ukrainian language at bookstores participating in the program. A list of these bookstores will be published on the "Diia" and the Ukrainian Book Institute websites. Payment for book purchases with the "eBook" card can be made cashless: contactless using a smartphone (NFC) at the terminal in the bookstore or using the "eBook" card details on the bookstore's website," the ministry reported.
It is also planned that a year after the end of martial law in Ukraine, one of the parents or their legal representative will be able to receive this assistance upon the birth of a child.
"The government chose these categories to encourage young people to read books and support families with small children, fostering a love for reading from an early age," the agency added.
