On December 19, 2024, Professor Nikolai Petrovich Fedchenko passed away at the age of 75. He was a renowned histologist and pathomorphologist, whose name is forever etched in the history of Dnipro State Medical University and Ukrainian medicine as a whole. This was reported by "Vydamo" citing "Dnipro State Medical University".
Nikolai Petrovich was born in the city of Horlivka in the Donetsk region. His life journey was intrinsically linked to medicine from the very beginning. In 1974, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Medicine at Dnipropetrovsk Medical Institute, laying the foundation for a brilliant career that spanned three important areas: clinical practice, teaching, and fundamental scientific research.
After graduating from the institute, Nikolai Petrovich actively engaged in practical work, constantly enhancing his knowledge and skills. His professional path was marked by significant achievements and leadership positions. He headed the department of pathomorphology and electron microscopy, and from 1996 to 1999, he led the Department of Pathological Anatomy and Forensic Medicine at DGMU. These years were filled with hard work, student training, and conducting complex research.
The scientific activity of Professor Fedchenko was primarily dedicated to the pathomorphosis of thyroid diseases, particularly in the context of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. His research was of immense importance for understanding the mechanisms of these diseases' development and for devising effective treatment methods. He made an invaluable contribution to the experimental justification of a new theory of atherosclerosis pathogenesis, while also discovering the F-shell of the thyroid gland—an important milestone in the advancement of histology and pathomorphology.
Professor Fedchenko's scientific legacy is considerable—he is the author of over 130 scientific works.
Professor Fedchenko was not only an outstanding scientist but also a talented educator. He shared his knowledge and experience with students, instilling in them a love for the profession and a drive for excellence. Many of his students are now leading specialists in the field of medicine, continuing the work of their mentor.
