This word is also the root of the modern Ukrainian term "hryvnia," which denotes the unit of national currency.

Why "hryvna" is incorrect

Linguist Oleksandr Avramenko points out that the term "hryvna" should be forgotten when it comes to money.

"Remember: 'hryvna' is an ancient accessory in the form of a hoop, primarily made of gold. When discussing money, it is correct to say 'hryvnia.' By the way, even in Russian, the term used is 'hryvnia,' not 'hryvna,'" explains Avramenko.
