According to Biden, he personally shared this news with two former presidents who "fully understand the weight of the responsibility that rests on the shoulders of the Commander-in-Chief," and "they were deeply moved," as stated in a statement by Biden.
This concerns two Ford-class aircraft carriers, designated CVN 82 and CVN 83, with construction expected to commence in the coming years. This is currently the latest class of aircraft carriers, which serves as one of the key components of the U.S. Navy, replacing the Nimitz-class ships since 2009. This class includes three aircraft carriers, two of which are named after former presidents – Gerald Ford and John Kennedy.
CVN 82 and CVN 83 will be the first U.S. Navy ships named after leaders whose presidential terms occurred in the 21st century. None of the presidents from this period – Barack Obama, Donald Trump, or Joe Biden – have yet been honored with a ship named after them.
The name of George W. Bush's father, "George Bush," is carried by a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Another carrier of the same class has been named in honor of the 40th president, Ronald Reagan. In recognition of Jimmy Carter, who passed away in December at the age of 100, the submarine SSN-23 was named after him, making him the only president in history to have a submarine named in his honor while still alive.
