India has successfully performed an automatic docking in space for the first time.

Индия впервые успешно провела автоматическую стыковку в космосе.

The experimental satellites SDX01 and SDX02 were launched into orbit by the PSLV rocket on December 30 from the launch pad on Sriharikota Island in the Bay of Bengal.

As part of the experiment, the satellites, which were on different orbits, were supposed to rendezvous in space, perform an automated docking, merge their energy systems and controls, undock, and then operate separately again.

Such technologies are essential for complex space missions, including crewed missions. Currently, only the first part of the experiment has been completed. The merging of energy systems and undocking will be conducted later, according to a statement from the Indian space agency.

Until today, successful automated docking in space has been achieved by the USA, the Soviet Union, Russia, and China. India is actively advancing its space program. In 2024, the country ranked fourth in the number of successful space launches, following the USA, China, and Russia.
