It took place under the conditions of the coronavirus pandemic. The law on remote voting was enacted by the ruling party "Law and Justice" despite opposition protests. Nevertheless, the voting was canceled just three days before the election date. The elections were primarily conducted in-person in June and July of the same year.
According to the investigation, Morawiecki exceeded his authority in an attempt to organize the voting, causing the budget a loss of 56.4 million zlotys ($13.6 million). This charge could result in a real prison sentence for the politician.
The 56-year-old Morawiecki led the Polish government from 2017 to 2023. He is a member of the Sejm representing "Law and Justice," which is currently in opposition. To strip him of his immunity, the prosecutor's request must be reviewed by the deputies, who need to support the decision by a majority vote.
