Reuters: The U.S. has made it easier for Budapest to pay for Russian gas.

Reuters: США облегчили Будапешту процесс оплаты за российский газ.

The sanctions imposed by Washington against Gazprombank were enacted on November 21, creating obstacles for European buyers of Russian gas. Buyers utilized Gazprombank for making payments.

Hungary, which heavily relies on Russian oil and gas, has requested an exemption from the obligation to comply with Washington's sanctions against Gazprombank.

The sanctions against this bank have caused difficulties for several importers, including Turkey and Slovakia. These countries are awaiting clarifications and alternative payment options.

"Today, they provided an exemption for gas payments related to Gazprombank, which is good news. At the same time, we have developed a solution with our regional allies. The alternative payment method does not violate the sanctions but allows for the payment (for gas)," said Szijjártó to a reporter in New York, according to a released video.

Reuters was unable to immediately reach the U.S. Department of the Treasury for comments.

The main gas buyer in Slovakia, the state-owned company SPP, stated that it had not received notification about the exemption for gas payments.

Szijjártó mentioned that the U.S. continues to prohibit financial transactions through Gazprombank related to the Paks II nuclear power plant, which is being constructed in Hungary by the Russian corporation Rosatom.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister stated that Hungary's energy supply is "secure," although he did not provide further details regarding gas payments, reported Reuters.
