The UN Security Council has extended the mandate for peacekeepers in the area between Syria and the Golan Heights.

In the resolution adopted on Friday, the Security Council emphasized that "both parties must adhere to the terms of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Israel and the Syrian Arab Republic and strictly observe the ceasefire regime."

Secretary-General António Guterres stated on Thursday: "There should be no military forces in the buffer zone, except for UN peacekeepers – and that is final." He also mentioned that Israeli airstrikes on Syria constitute a violation of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity and "must cease."
