The UN resolution draft is prepared for February 24, 2025, marking the three-year anniversary of the war's onset. Such resolutions have been issued by the organization in the previous two years, with the USA always listed as a co-author. Now, the authors of the resolution include only the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
The document titled "Promoting a Comprehensive, Just, and Lasting Peace in Ukraine" demands that Russia "immediately, fully, and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine." Last year, the document mentioned Russia's aggression five times. Now, as FT sources claim, the administration of President Donald Trump is blocking such wording.
This decision by the USA may be linked to the negotiations that began on February 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between representatives of the USA and Russia regarding the war in Ukraine. Following the negotiations, both sides announced plans to initiate a full-fledged negotiation process. The preparation for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was also discussed, though the date has yet to be determined.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow "has reason to believe that Washington has become more receptive to Russia's position." Later, Trump sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and suggested reinstating Russia in the "G7" and easing sanctions against Russia.
