The incident occurred in early December. The aircraft was registered in Lithuania and, according to LRT, it was being delivered to a new owner in Russia. At the same time, a citizen of Latvia was on board, claiming that the Beechcraft belonged to him.
The sale of aviation equipment to Russia is prohibited by international sanctions. The pilot of the aircraft was already suspected of violating this rule, as noted by Sever.Realii. In spring 2023, he was ferrying a Beechcraft B24R Sierra from Kaunas Airport to Pskov. Later, this aircraft was sold in Moscow for 138 thousand euros. At that time, the pilot was also operating a Cessna 172, which was detained in Palanga. It was being attempted to be delivered to Russia through intermediaries in Turkey and Italy.
Previously, private planes had already been detained in Finland on suspicion of circumventing sanctions. In autumn 2022, authorities confiscated three aircraft that, according to Finnish authorities, were used by individuals listed in the sanctions, Yle reported.
