A casket containing the remains of Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, has arrived in Washington.

Over the decades since then, his reputation as a committed and active humanist has solidified. In 2002, Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Carter lived a longer life than any other U.S. president. He spent nearly the last two years in hospice care. His last public appearance was at the funeral of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter in November 2023.

Members of Congress are paying tribute to the former president during a service that began in the Rotunda at 4:30 PM. The time for farewell will commence at 6:00 PM and continue until midnight.

On Wednesday, the public farewell will resume at 7:00 AM, with Carter's casket remaining in the Rotunda for 24 hours. It will then be transported to the National Cathedral.

It is expected that Biden and Trump will attend the memorial service on Thursday.

Joe Biden is anticipated to speak at the memorial at 10 AM. Following this, the remains of Jimmy Carter will be taken back to his birthplace in Georgia. On the same day, he will be laid to rest in his hometown of Plains.
