As part of an action commemorating the anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine, 48-year-old Vasile H. and 59-year-old Georges S. threw bottles filled with liquid nitrogen onto the grounds of the Russian diplomatic mission in Marseille on February 24.
On Thursday, February 27, the court found them guilty of “attempting to damage someone else's property by dangerous means” and “illegal manufacturing of explosive substances.”
During the trial, Vasile H. and Georges S. admitted their guilt, stating that their act was a political gesture against Russian aggression in Ukraine. Both scholars explained that they did not anticipate the potential diplomatic repercussions of their action.
The prosecutor emphasized that an attack on a diplomatic mission constitutes a violation of international norms, even if it did not cause significant harm. The Russian consul demanded a harsher punishment, labeling the incident a “terrorist attack.”
At the next court session on January 23, 2026, the issue of compensation for the damage inflicted on the Russian consulate in Marseille will be addressed.
