Donald Trump made his decision following a phone call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who promised to implement additional security measures at the Canada-U.S. border.
"Canada has agreed to secure our northern border and put an end to the deadly flow of drugs, such as fentanyl, into our country", – reported President Trump on his social media page.
After the conversation with the U.S. President, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that Canada intends to take further steps to protect the border with the United States by increasing border services by 10,000 personnel, deploying helicopters for border security, enhancing cooperation with the American side, and appointing an official responsible for combating fentanyl smuggling. A budget of one billion three hundred million dollars has been allocated for the implementation of the new border security plan. Canada will also list drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
Two days prior, U.S. President Donald Trump signed presidential orders introducing a 25% import tariff on nearly all Canadian and Mexican imports into the United States. President Trump justified his decision by citing Mexico and Canada’s failure to stop the flow of illegal migrants across the U.S. border and take necessary measures to intercept drugs, particularly fentanyl.
On Monday, just hours before the presidential orders were set to take effect, it was announced that an agreement had been reached between President Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, under which the tariffs would be postponed for one month.
Trump's decision to impose a 10% tariff on imports from China, also announced on February 1, remains in effect.
