According to sources from the publication, Trump’s team wants Maduro to share the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown by anti-government groups at the end of last year.

Venezuela is viewed as a threat to the U.S. due to the migration crisis and drug trafficking. Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a candidate for the head of the State Department in Trump’s second administration, labeled Venezuela as a "state run by a drug cartel."

Axios sources point out that Maduro's policies are leading to the country's destruction, creating widespread refugee issues and sending criminals to the U.S.

Trump has become more actively engaged in considering regime change in Venezuela after current President Joe Biden lifted Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. Trump believes the Cuban regime is a key cause of problems in Latin America.

Nicolas Maduro was inaugurated as President of Venezuela for the third time on January 10. The U.S. did not recognize his inauguration and announced a $25 million reward for information leading to his arrest.
