More than half of countries fail to keep their commitments to protect the environment.

Свыше половины стран не выполняют свои обязательства по защите окружающей среды.

In the plans of 70 out of 137 countries, there are no provisions for the protection of their lands and seas, and it is difficult to understand whether the plans of another ten will lead to any action. Together, these countries account for more than a third of the planet's area and include biodiversity-rich nations such as Mexico, Peru, South Africa, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Additionally, 61 countries have not presented any plans for biodiversity conservation at all.

The findings of the research raise concerns that the commitments made by countries in 2020 may again go unfulfilled, just like all previous ones. According to The Guardian, countries have not achieved any targets in the history of UN biodiversity agreements, which are made once a decade.

The Protected Planet Report 2024 states that 17.6% of land and 8.4% of oceans are located within protected and reserved areas worldwide. Since 2020, their coverage has increased by only 0.5 percentage points each.

Experts assert that protecting nature is essential not only for preserving tens of thousands of species of animals and plants but also for ensuring proper pollination, water and air filtration, storm protection, and preventing pandemics.

An analysis of countries' efforts for nature conservation was released in conjunction with the resumption of the biodiversity protection conference. The session could not be completed in November due to disagreements over biodiversity protection funding. The final meeting then lasted 12 hours longer, and delegates returned to their countries, resulting in a lack of quorum for the agreement to be adopted. Now, it will be attempted again in Rome from February 25 to 27.
