Cherchesov took charge of the team in June 2024. It was reported that the contract was signed for two years – until the end of the qualifying tournament for the 2026 World Cup. Under his leadership, the Kazakhstan national football team played six matches in the UEFA Nations League. The team earned only one point, drawing with Norway.
In October of last year, the Football Federation of Kazakhstan fined Cherchesov 738,000 tenge ($1500). The reason was his joke about the Kazakh language. The coach was accused of disrespecting the language.
