As a result, Russians will not participate in the football tournament of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, as the participants from the European continent must determine their eligibility based on the outcomes of the European Championship.
According to Olympic rules, the football tournament features teams that are primarily composed of players aged 21 and under.
- Russian athletes have been banned from the vast majority of international competitions in response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This includes sanctions against football teams and clubs. Russians may compete in individual sports, including the Olympics, under a neutral status, provided they have not expressed support for the war and are not connected to the military.
- Due to the war and sanctions, over two hundred Russian athletes have changed or are planning to change their sporting nationality to participate in international competitions. This includes both emerging athletes and globally recognized figures, such as the World Chess Championship winner Alexandra Kosteniuk, who now competes for Switzerland.
