The water rose to a meter level, flooding the turtle shelters and sweeping them away. Most managed to stay afloat, but around 700 perished, trapped in rocks or debris.
In total, about twelve thousand turtles lived in Lavavolo. All of them were rescued from illegal traders over the past six years. Radiated turtles can grow up to nearly 40 centimeters and, in favorable conditions, may live for over a hundred years. Spider turtles are smaller and have a shorter lifespan. Both species are found only in Madagascar in the wild.
Previously, tens of millions of turtles inhabited the island, but their numbers sharply declined due to poaching and habitat destruction. Turtles are captured for sale as pets or for consumption: their meat is eaten, and their shells are crafted into souvenirs. Recently, the catch of turtles for commercial purposes has decreased due to trade regulation.
