The trial of former Spanish football president Rubiales has commenced.

A loud scandal involving Rubiales erupted in August 2023 when the Spanish women's national football team became world champions. While handing the trophy to the team's forward, Jennifer Hermoso, Rubiales kissed her on the lips. He did not seek Hermoso's consent for the kiss. This gesture was interpreted by the football community as unacceptable coercion and an expression of machismo.

The 33-year-old footballer initially stated on Instagram that she "did not like" Rubiales' actions, but later a statement was published on her behalf defending him. The investigation also claims that Rubiales subsequently attempted to coerce Hermoso into stating that the kiss was consensual. Rubiales denies this.

The kiss was categorically condemned by Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who called it an "unacceptable gesture." Dozens of female players from the national team refused to participate in further matches until Rubiales resigned from his position. He repeatedly refused to do so and demanded an end to the "witch hunt," but in September 2023, he eventually resigned. In October 2023, he was banned and suspended from any activities related to football.
