This week, 24-year-old performer Rafael won the talent competition "Rising Star," granting her the opportunity to represent her country at "Eurovision 2025" in the Swiss city of Basel this May.
According to France-Presse, during the selection process in Israel, Rafael performed the song "Dancing Queen" by the Swedish group ABBA in a ballad format. She dedicated her performance, as she stated, "to all the angels" who were killed at the festival.
Which song Rafael will take to Basel will be revealed in the coming weeks.
In the attack by militants from the radical Palestinian group Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization in the U.S. and the EU, 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel in the fall of 2023, and over 250 more were taken hostage. At the Nova festival, more than 370 individuals fell victim to the radical Islamists, with 44 taken hostage.
Yuval Rafael, in her testimony to the UN Human Rights Council in April 2024, noted that when the rocket fire began, which preceded the militants' attack, she and a group of other festival attendees took shelter in a small bomb shelter. Soon, the attackers opened fire there as well. "When the bodies of the dead fell on us, I realized that hiding under them was the only way to survive this nightmare," Rafael recounted.
