In September 2023, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin informed Congress of the intention to support the repatriation of 11 detainees following a thorough review, as noted by the Pentagon.
"The United States highly values the willingness of the government of Oman and other partners to support ongoing U.S. efforts to reduce the number of detainees and ultimately close the Guantanamo prison," emphasized the American military department.
The Guantanamo detention camp is a U.S. military prison located on the grounds of the American naval base in Cuba. It was established during the administration of former President George W. Bush after the terrorist attacks in the U.S. on September 11, 2001. It housed individuals suspected of terrorism and ties to Islamic radicals.
At one point, the number of detainees in this prison reached nearly 800, amidst widespread international criticism and allegations of depriving suspects of their right to a fair trial and human rights violations.
Human rights organizations are calling for the closure of the camp, where 15 detainees still remain. According to the Pentagon, three of them are eligible for transfer, and the same number is awaiting consideration of their cases by the periodic review board. The others have been charged or convicted of war crimes, reports "Voice of America".
