"Putin is ready, we are waiting for signals," – reported Peskov to journalists.
When asked if we should expect "that call" over the weekend, the president's representative replied: "It's hard to predict. If something happens, we will inform you."
Peskov also stated that the outcome of the war between Russia and Ukraine does not depend on global oil prices, and that the military actions are linked to the "threat to the national security of the Russian Federation."
Yesterday, Trump, during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, noted that high oil prices allow Russia to continue the conflict with Ukraine. He urged major oil producers, particularly Saudi Arabia and OPEC countries, to increase production and lower prices to bring an end to the hostilities.
Commenting on potential peace agreements between Moscow and Kyiv, Peskov explained that the Ukrainian president cannot be ready for negotiations since he has forbidden himself from talking to Russia.
Earlier, Zelensky signed a decree prohibiting negotiations with the Russian president. Putin, in turn, stated that Russia would be ready for peace talks only if Ukraine withdraws its troops from the four regions that Moscow previously claimed to have annexed.
Zelensky recently told Bloomberg in an interview that he would be ready for negotiations with Russia if they are conducted from a "position of strength." For this, Ukraine must receive the necessary security guarantees from the United States.
Trump himself, in an interview with Fox News on January 23, declared that Zelensky should not have allowed the Russian attack on Ukraine.
"You know, he’s not an angel; he shouldn’t have let this war happen," Trump said, noting that Zelensky wants to negotiate with Russia.
The U.S. president reiterated that he does not want to, but is prepared to impose significant sanctions on Russia if Moscow does not agree to a ceasefire.
The Office of the President of Ukraine did not comment on Trump’s recent statements.
