The suspect is a 42-year-old U.S. citizen from Texas, a veteran of the American army who previously served in Afghanistan, named Shamsud-Din Jabbar. He was pronounced dead at the scene during a shootout with police.
It is reported that on December 31, he was traveling from Houston to New Orleans and posted five videos on Facebook in which he claimed to support the "Islamic State." In one of the videos, Jabbar mentioned that he had previously planned to harm his family and friends but was concerned that media coverage would not focus on the "war between believers and non-believers."
The tragedy occurred on Bourbon Street, one of the busiest streets in the city center, located in the French Quarter. At the time of the attack, people were celebrating the New Year. According to the FBI, at least 15 people were killed, including the suspect.
The FBI also stated that there appears to be no connection between the attack in New Orleans and the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck near the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas.
The Tesla Cybertruck exploded on Wednesday afternoon near the hotel owned by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. The driver of the vehicle was killed, and seven others were injured. The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, but pyrotechnics and gasoline canisters were found inside the vehicle.
