At the end of December 2024, a large-scale operation took place in Dnipro to rescue the largest and unique population of the red evening bats – a rare species of bats. This story has continued, revealing how many of the animals could not be saved. This information was reported by "Vidomo" with reference to Dnipro Operational.
Volunteers fought for the lives of the "evening bats" for several days, but unfortunately, 347 individuals died and could not be saved.
The situation initially arose when a colony of 1779 individuals was discovered in a city apartment on a glazed balcony – the largest winter hibernation of red evening bats recorded in this region in recent decades. The apartment owner, upon finding these unexpected "tenants," sought their removal not through specialized organizations with the appropriate expertise, but through the State Emergency Service.
The attempt to clear the house of this colony nearly resulted in a mass death of the animals. A meticulous effort began to save each individual.
The team of volunteers checked the condition of each bat, fed the weakened ones, treated the injured, and prepared them for wintering. They managed to save 1432 bats, which will continue to hibernate in artificial conditions.
