The Prime Minister of Slovakia has threatened to reduce aid for Ukrainian refugees.

Премьер-министр Словакии предупредил о возможном сокращении поддержки для украинских беженцев.

The Smer party, led by Fico, will consider halting electricity supplies to Ukraine, reducing assistance to Ukrainian refugees, and will demand the resumption of gas transit or compensation for losses that, according to the Prime Minister, Slovakia has incurred due to the cessation of Russian gas supplies. Fico estimated these losses to be nearly 500 million euros.

"I declare that [my party] is ready to debate and reach an agreement within the coalition on stopping electricity supplies and significantly reducing support for Ukrainian citizens in Slovakia," Fico stated. He also referred to the cessation of gas supplies as "sabotage" by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Slovakia has alternative sources for gas supplies, but Fico claims that the country will lose its own transit revenues and will incur additional transit fees for the delivery of non-Russian gas.

Russian gas exports through Ukraine ceased on January 1, as the transit contract between Russia and Ukraine expired. Slovakia had called on Ukraine to extend the agreement.
