Reuters: The U.S. and Russia engaged in unofficial discussions in Geneva.

Reuters: США и Россия провели неформальные переговоры в Женеве.

According to sources from the agency, both parties viewed these discussions as an additional channel for communication, established shortly after Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential elections last November. Among the participants of the meetings, it is claimed, were former diplomats and individuals from the security sector; however, none held any official positions, and it is unclear whether these meetings were conducted at the behest of the authorities of both countries. The specific names of the participants are not disclosed. The sources are also unaware if representatives from Ukraine took part in the meetings.

The agency reports that a small number of Trump's advisors were aware of these meetings. It does not clarify whether Trump himself was informed about them.

The last such meeting reportedly took place last week, coinciding with the Munich Security Conference.

Reuters reminds that similar informal meetings between U.S. and Russian representatives regarding the resolution of the war in Ukraine also occurred at the turn of 2023-2024, prior to the U.S. elections. It is asserted that these meetings did not yield any results.

One of Reuters' sources suggested that the purpose of holding meetings in Switzerland, after the U.S. and Russia conducted official negotiations in Riyadh, is lost.
