The Russian ship Sparta II has been granted permission to dock at the Syrian port of Tartus.

Судно Sparta II из России получило разрешение на заход в сирийский порт Тартус.

Earlier on Tuesday, it became known that the Syrian leadership, which came to power after the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in early December, has annulled the investment agreement between the Russian company "Stroytransgaz" and the port of Tartus. This refers to the civilian port of Tartus, which also houses Russia's naval base, known as a supply point.

Recently, satellite images showed that Russia has transported military equipment to Tartus from its bases and deployment locations in Syria.

Issues regarding the entry of the cargo vessel Sparta into the port were reported in early January by the publication "Important Stories." On the 6th, it stated that the vessel was presumably heading to the naval base in Tartus to evacuate Russian military personnel from Syria but likely did not receive permission to enter the port.

  • After the ousting of Assad's regime in early Syria, the fate of the Russian base in Tartus, as well as the airbase in Latakia, was called into question. Reports indicated that Russian troops had entered negotiations regarding the fate of these facilities with the new Syrian authorities, formed by forces against which Russia had previously engaged in armed conflict on Assad's side. In December, it was reported that Russia had withdrawn its ships from the port of Tartus and had presumably begun evacuating property. However, to date, no decisions regarding the closure of the bases or the withdrawal of military personnel have been announced.
