The Slovak Prime Minister estimated that the EU's losses from the halt in gas transit amount to €70 billion.

Премьер Словакии оценил убытки ЕС от прекращения газового транзита в €70 миллиардов.

Fico addressed the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, in an open letter criticizing Ukraine and its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, for the decision to halt gas transit. According to him, the losses for the EU are incomparable to those of Russia, which he estimated at two billion euros.

Slovakia, Fico states in the letter, will incur a loss of 400 million. The losses to the Ukrainian budget from transit fees are estimated at 800 million. These calculations, he mentioned, were made at his request by the Slovak state energy company SPP.

In the letter, Fico claims that the economic assessment of Ukraine's decision to stop gas transit was not discussed by the European Commission with member states. The President of Ukraine, the Slovak Prime Minister wrote, did not hold open consultations on the matter with EU authorities or the affected member states.

The Slovak Prime Minister stated that Ukraine's decision to cease transit "will lead to retaliatory measures." This part is not elaborated upon – Fico had previously stated that he could halt electricity supplies to Kyiv.

Almost simultaneously with Fico's letter to European authorities, Kyiv reached out. Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko stated during a national telethon that the country had contacted EU leadership due to Fico's threats. "We would very much like everyone in the EU to adhere to the norms and regulations that currently exist," he said (quote from "RBK-Ukraine").
