Katsarova has repeatedly called for the release of Gorinov and for him to be granted access to proper medical care. International and Russian human rights groups have echoed these demands.
"In addition to arbitrary detentions and sham trials, the conditions under which Alexei Gorinov is held can be equated to torture," emphasized the UN special rapporteur, as noted by the AFP agency.
"I will continue to advocate for the release of political prisoners, whose numbers have risen to nearly 2000, and possibly many more," she stated. "The abuse of national security legislation to suppress dissent in Russia must come to an end."
In July 2022, Gorinov was sentenced to seven years in prison after he reprimanded his colleagues during a council meeting for planning to hold a children's drawing contest amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He was found guilty of "knowingly spreading false information about the actions of the Russian army."
