Katsarova has repeatedly called for the release of Gorinov and for him to be granted access to proper medical care. International and Russian human rights groups have made similar appeals.
"In addition to arbitrary detentions and sham trials, the conditions of Alexey Gorinov's detention can be likened to torture," emphasized the UN special rapporteur, as noted by the AFP agency.
"I will continue to call for the release of political prisoners, whose numbers have risen to nearly 2000, and possibly even more," she stated. "The abuse of national security legislation to suppress dissent in Russia must come to an end."
In July 2022, Gorinov was sentenced to seven years in prison after he criticized his colleagues during a council meeting for planning a children's drawing competition amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He was found guilty of "knowingly spreading false information about the actions of the Russian army."
