The US and the Taliban conducted a prisoner exchange.

США и "Талибан" осуществили обмен пленными.

As a result, two Americans – Ryan Corbett and William McKenty – and Taliban member Khan Mohammed were freed.

Corbett's family announced his return home. The American had been living in Afghanistan in 2021 when the Taliban seized power following the withdrawal of U.S. troops and was detained in 2022 during a business trip. Corbett spent 894 days in captivity, his relatives noted, expressing gratitude to both current and former U.S. Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, as well as the Qatari government.

CNN and The New York Times, citing anonymous American officials, identified the second released individual as William McKenty. No further details about him have been disclosed.

The Taliban's Foreign Ministry in Kabul confirmed the exchange of the two unnamed Americans for Khan Mohammed, who was sentenced to two life terms in the U.S. in 2008 for drug trafficking and terrorism charges.

The "Taliban" described the exchange as a result of "long and fruitful negotiations" with the U.S. and a step towards "normalizing and developing relations between the two countries." The Taliban government does not recognize any United Nations member states. In several countries, the movement is classified as a terrorist organization.
