This was revealed in a new indictment made public on Tuesday. Charges of conspiracy to commit murder for hire and money laundering have been brought against Ruhollah Bazghandi and three other Iranian nationals.
The indictment identifies Bazghandi as a brigadier general in the IRGC. Last year, the U.S. Treasury Department referred to him as an intelligence officer.
"Today's indictment reveals the full extent of Iran's conspiracy to silence an American journalist for criticizing the Iranian regime," said FBI Director Christopher Wray. "It demonstrates that the FBI will work with our partners both here and abroad to hold accountable those who target Americans."
Alinajad stated that the charges illustrate how far the Iranian government is willing to go to silence its critics. She openly criticizes Iranian authorities and their treatment of women, including the mandatory wearing of hijab in the country.
This is not the first time allegations have surfaced regarding the failed plot to assassinate Alinajad. Previously, federal charges of attempted murder for hire were filed against members of an Eastern European criminal organization with ties to Iran, who were hired to carry out the assassination.
The failed assassination attempt on Alinajad occurred a year after her kidnapping attempt in 2021. The FBI stated that authorities in Tehran wanted to transport her back to Iran.
Following the kidnapping attempt, Alinajad has been under the protection of the U.S. government and frequently moves from one safe location to another. Despite the threats, she refuses to cease her work.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry did not respond to Voice of America's request for comment.
