In 2023, amidst the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict and escalating nuclear tensions, the Doomsday Clock was moved forward by a full 10 seconds, setting a new record at 11:58:30 PM. In 2024, it remained at this same point.
According to Daniel Holz, a professor at the University of Chicago and a participant in the "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists," experts are not seeing progress in addressing global issues such as nuclear risks and biological threats. "Nuclear-armed countries are expanding their arsenals, investing hundreds of billions of dollars in weapons capable of destroying civilization," Holz emphasized.
Initially, in 1947, the clock was set to 7 minutes to midnight. The safest position was 17 minutes to midnight in 1991, following the end of the Cold War.
