This marks the first instance in the constitutional history of the country where an arrest warrant has been issued for the sitting head of state, the agency notes.
Sources from "Yonhap" clarified that the court authorized the arrest of Yoon Seok-youl on three charges: abuse of power, an unconstitutional attempt to impose martial law, and an attempted coup. The warrant allows for a 48-hour period for the detention of the temporarily suspended president. The court also issued a search warrant that law enforcement intends to execute at the president's residence.
Previously, Yoon Seok-youl failed to appear for questioning three times as a suspect in allegations of leading a coup and abusing power.
On December 14, the National Assembly of South Korea voted for the second time to remove President Yoon Seok-youl from office.
The impeachment issue was raised in parliament after Yoon Seok-youl announced the imposition of martial law "to combat internal supporters of North Korea" on December 3. The decree, which lasted for six hours, prohibited the operation of political parties, protests, and strikes, imposed censorship, and established military field tribunals with the authority to issue death sentences. This triggered massive protests both on the streets of Seoul and in parliament. Lawmakers directly during the military storming of the building voted to overturn the president's decision. Following this, he was legally compelled to rescind the decree.
An investigation into the coup case has been initiated. Yoon Seok-youl has been prohibited from leaving the country.
