California is experiencing a fire at the world's largest lithium energy storage facility.

"The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but an investigation will begin as soon as the flames are extinguished," stated company spokesperson Jenny Lyon.

Monterey County authorities have issued an evacuation order. Earlier, local residents were advised to close their windows. There are no reports of any injuries resulting from the fire.

Texas-based Vistra Energy owns a natural gas power plant in Monterey along with an adjacent lithium-ion battery facility. The storage system has the capacity to hold 750 megawatts, which is enough to power approximately 562,000 homes for four hours.
