An investigation has been launched against the assailant, 27-year-old Mordechai Brafman, for attempted murder of two individuals. The victims were hospitalized but were soon discharged from the hospital, local portal Local 10 News clarifies.
The attack occurred on Saturday, February 15. According to the case documents, Brafman opened fire on a vehicle, shooting it seventeen times with a semi-automatic pistol. After his arrest, he stated that he was driving his truck, "saw two Palestinians, shot, and killed both."
The victims turned out to be Israeli tourists, according to the police. They described the shooting as "unprovoked": there was no argument between Brafman and the injured parties.
After the attack, one of the victims, Ari Rabei, shared his experience on Facebook, attaching several photos and videos, including one of himself in a hospital bed. "My father and I survived an assassination attempt with an anti-Semitic background," Rabei wrote, concluding his post with a wish for death to Arabs.
Later, Rabei deleted this account and published a new one, where he retained the "nationalist grounds" of the attack but removed the wish for death to Arabs. The original post is being recalled in comments, and a screenshot has spread on X.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations called for Brafman to be charged with a hate motive, which would significantly increase his punishment. The assailant’s lawyer claims that he was "experiencing mental health issues at the time of the incident" and is willing to seek treatment.
