The decision to demolish the monument was announced at the end of September 2024. At that time, the city executive committee also resolved to remove the monuments to Pushkin, as well as writers Isaac Babel and Maxim Gorky.
The monument was erected in 2012 near the building of the Odessa Film Studio, where Vysotsky starred in eight feature films, including the movie "The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed."
The initiative to install the monument came from former Verkhovna Rada deputy Igor Markov. In the summer of 2022, he was accused of collaborationism due to his support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Markov is a regular participant in propaganda talk shows on Russian state television channels.
