The father of the shooter, Vladimir Ketsmanovich, has been sentenced to 14.5 years in prison. The court found him guilty of failing to fulfill parental responsibilities, child abuse, and a crime against public safety, as Ketsmanovich kept firearms in an accessible location at home, which his son used during the school shooting. His wife, Milana, was found guilty of failing to fulfill parental duties and received a three-year prison sentence.
In addition to the parents, a shooting instructor who worked with the teenager was sentenced to 15 months in prison. The court deemed him guilty of providing false testimony.
As reported by the Serbian media company RTS, the court stated that the Ketsmanovich family neglected their son's interests and failed to provide him with the necessary psychological support, which could have indirectly contributed to the crime. The father took the child to shooting ranges, while the mother pressured him to excel in his studies. Weapons were not stored safely in their home.
The tragedy at the "Vladislav Ribnikar" school in the Belgrade municipality of Vračar occurred on May 3, 2024. A seventh-grader, whose name has not been disclosed, received a poor grade in history and opened fire with two pistols he brought from home. Nine students and a security guard were killed, and four other children and a history teacher were injured.
The shooter cannot be held criminally responsible, as he was not yet 14 years old at the time of the crime. After his arrest, he was sent to a psychiatric hospital.
