An 18-year-old Russian was arrested in the German capital on charges of planning a terrorist attack.

It has been reported that an 18-year-old Russian national allegedly intended to carry out an attack on the Israeli embassy in the German capital. The police thwarted the terrorist act by arresting the suspect at Berlin's BER airport. The investigation was previously initiated by the Attorney General's office of Brandenburg.

According to the ARD broadcasting company, the suspect is of Chechen nationality and was residing in Potsdam. He was apprehended while attempting to leave Germany on February 20. As reported by the dpa agency, security agencies believe that the planned attack has an Islamist background.

On Friday, the suspect appeared before a judge, who ordered his detention based on evidence of preparing a serious violent crime posing a threat to the state. The investigation is ongoing, and no official information regarding the motives or reasons for the suspect's actions has been released yet.

Jan Müller, the deputy head of the Brandenburg police, emphasized that security agencies acted in a coordinated and professional manner. He stated that they take all threats and indications of possible terrorist acts very seriously.

The police had previously reported receiving information about a planned terrorist act in Berlin. The suspect had not previously come to the attention of law enforcement agencies regarding criminal offenses.
