Verkhovna Rada: Zelensky will remain president until the next elections.

Верховная Рада подтвердила, что Зеленский продолжит исполнять обязанности президента до следующих выборов.

According to the resolution, the responsibility for the inability to hold elections in Ukraine lies with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The deputies determined that the elections for the Ukrainian president will only occur when a "comprehensive, fair, and sustainable peace" is ensured.

The Verkhovna Rada also indicated in the document that Zelensky's mandate is not in question, as he was elected through a transparent and free vote. He will continue to exercise his powers until a new president is inaugurated.

The day before, the Verkhovna Rada was unable to pass the resolution. At that time, 218 deputies voted for the document, falling short of the necessary 226 votes.

The resolution is not a document of direct action but serves as a demonstration that the parliament does not question the authority of the head of state.

  • The presidential elections in Ukraine were supposed to take place in the spring of last year but were postponed due to the war. According to the law of Ukraine "On the Legal Regime of Martial Law," elections are not held during a state of martial law, and the powers of the current authorities are extended until it is lifted. After this, Russian President Vladimir Putin repeatedly referred to Zelensky as illegitimate, claiming that his term had expired and stating that he had no right to sign any agreements with Russia, although he acknowledged the legitimacy of the Verkhovna Rada.
  • Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump labeled Zelensky a "dictator without elections," claiming he is supported by only 4% of the country's citizens. He also stated that there was no need for the Ukrainian president to be present at peace negotiations regarding Ukraine. Zelensky remarked that Trump lives in a "space of disinformation."
