According to survey data, Milanović is receiving over 51 percent of the votes (to win in the first round, 50% plus one vote is required). His main competitor, Dragan Primorac from the ruling conservative party, reportedly does not even reach 20 percent according to exit polls.
Croatia is a parliamentary republic, with the Prime Minister making most of the key decisions in the country, while the President serves as the commander of the armed forces.
Milanović is known for his criticism of military aid to Ukraine. In particular, he has prohibited the training of Ukrainian soldiers on Croatian territory.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković labels him a "pro-Russian politician" and believes that Milanović is "damaging Croatia's reputation in NATO and the EU." In response, the President claims he is attempting to prevent "Croatia from being drawn into an unnecessary war" and that in Ukraine, "the U.S. and NATO are fighting against Russia."
