  • The presidential elections in Venezuela took place on July 28, 2024. The National Electoral Council declared Nicolas Maduro the winner, who has been in power since 2013. The opposition insists that Gonzalez won, publishing protocols from over 80% of polling stations indicating that Gonzalez won the elections by a significant margin and accused the authorities of fraud.
  • Following the elections, large-scale protests erupted, resulting in the deaths of 28 people and around 200 injuries. More than two thousand of Gonzalez's supporters were arrested. Gonzalez himself left Venezuela and has been granted political asylum in Spain. He is wanted in Venezuela on charges of anti-government conspiracy and organizing mass riots, and a warrant for his arrest has been issued.
  • Nine Latin American countries, including Argentina, Costa Rica, Panama, Paraguay, and Ecuador, have expressed doubts about Maduro's victory and called for a review of the election results. The United States named Edmundo Gonzalez the winner of the elections.
