WSJ: Paris and London will ask the U.S. to support peacekeeping forces.

WSJ: Париж и Лондон обратятся к США с просьбой о поддержке миротворческих сил.

The publication reports on plans to send up to 30,000 peacekeepers from European countries to Ukraine. The U.S., which does not intend to deploy its troops, will be asked to provide military resources that Europe lacks – to protect the peacekeeping forces in case of danger and to prevent Russia from violating the ceasefire.

For instance, it is suggested that the U.S. could utilize air defense systems in neighboring countries to cover part of Ukraine's territory, while American aircraft stationed outside Ukraine in Europe could be on standby in case European peacekeepers find themselves in jeopardy.

The Wall Street Journal cites British officials' views that American support for the peacekeeping mission will be critically important in preventing Russian attacks and will encourage other European countries to send peacekeepers to Ukraine.

  • Emmanuel Macron was the first among European leaders to announce the possibility of sending French troops to Ukraine. Keir Starmer stated that the UK is ready to send troops to Ukraine if the deployment of peacekeeping forces becomes part of potential peace agreements with Russia. A representative from Germany's Ministry of Defense also did not rule out the participation of German soldiers in the peacekeeping mission; however, Chancellor Olaf Scholz later stated that Berlin would consider such an option only if the U.S. participated in the mission. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson did not exclude the involvement of Swedish military personnel in the mission.
